US cancels funding for clean coal power plant
The US Energy Department have announced the cancellation of funding for a ‘clean coal’ power plant due to rising costs for the project.
The program started around four years ago and was hailed by many as a step towards a pollution-free energy future – FutureGen was hoping to show how to use coal without adding to climate change, and was also intending to provide hydrogen for fuel-cell cars.
Originally, the project was costed at $1 billion however current costs are estimated at around $1.8 billions and there are fears that the cost could rise even further. Officials have stated that the cancellation of the funding did not mean they were stepping away from coal as a fuel – instead, they will put the money towards further ‘clean coal’ research. Also, they are planning a new approach – several private companies are planning to build gasification plants and new plans can be piggybacked onto these plants.
