Sticky Fingers Protest

A woman in London has superglued herself to the front doors of an online travel agency in a protest against the booming airline industry. 52 year old Penny Eastwood travelled from West Yorkshire to lastminute.com’s headquarters in London and attached herself to the doors to encourage the UK Government to do more to stop aviation pollution.

Eastwood belongs to a group called Plane Stupid. She has accused G8 leaders of talking “hot air”, and has accused lastminute.com of encouraging customers to “binge-fly”. Whilst attached to the door, she handed out leaflets to passers by. The leaflets read, “I am standing up for the poorest of the World’s people, and for future generations, who will bear the brunt of climate chaos caused by the affluent lifestyles and frequent flying of the rich.

“If runaway climate change is to be averted, global carbon emissions need to peak this decade and decline rapidly thereafter. There is no way that this can be achieved without halting the explosion in air travel.”

Lastminute.com have issued a statement responding to the leaflets stating that they encourage all their customers to travel responsibly. “As well as offering a wide range of travel options, lastminute.com launched it’s award winning carbon-offsetting scheme in November 2006 which invites customers who choose to fly to offset their carbon emissions when booking flights through us.

“In it’s first six months, this scheme has seen 1 in 10 customers offsetting their flights. Money raised through the scheme is used on two sustainable tourism projects in Nicaragua and the Bahamas. To reinforce our commitment, we are launching the scheme across our DIY packages this month.”
