How many New Yorkers does it take to change a light bulb?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is hoping that 8 million New Yorkers will take the plunge and change to energy saving light bulbs. The US city is being urged to be more eco-friendly by buying energy-saving lightbulbs, use cloth grocery bags, unplug unused electronic equipment, switch to online bank statements, use green energy suppliers, take public transport and use eco-friendly cleaning products. Advertising for the new campaign in various mediums hit the city this week to spread the word.

The campaign is fairly retro-looking featuring a plump cartoon bird. It will appear on print advertisements as well as outdoor advertising and television commericals. The mayor is hoping that the ads will remind residents of the his target of reducing carbom emissions by 30% by 2030. “As people change their behaviour, they will also shape the habits of their own children,” Bloomberg explained. “And all the green choices we make today really will affect our city and our planet for generations to come.”

It has been calculated that if every household in New York replaced three quarters of its’ standard light bulbs with energy-efficient ones, enough savings would be made to power the entire city’s subways and light all of it’s stations.
