Energy saving light bulbs leave you red faced

Energy saving light-bulbs are under fire again, this time from government scientists who claim that some may emit more than the guideline rate of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Some researchers are now claiming that the fluorescent energy-saving bulbs may cause the skin to redden if used for long periods of time close to the skin, for example if you use a reading lamp on your bedside table. People who work in trades such as making jewellery may also find themselves affected.

Despite the problems with extensive exposure, it should be noted that there is no noted increased risk of skin cancer from the energy saving light bulbs.

The problems with the bulbs come from ‘open’ light bulbs which are not surrounded by a glass case (ie where the shape of the coil is clearly visible), and where people may come into close contact with the bulb for long periods of time. For the majority of people, using light saving bulbs, there should be no issues.

Those surrounded by a glass cover, ie those that look like a more traditional light bulb, and bulbs which are more than 12 inches away from the skin are not thought to cause any problems, although there is some anecdotal evidence (which has not been scientifically verified) that those with very sensitive skin may find their skin dries slightly and/or slightly reddens when in rooms with energy saving light bulbs for extended periods of time.

    Hi bud,

The attached ad simplified what I heard from the news couple days ago. After all sounds like it’s not scientifically verified as yet but the dangers cannot be ignored.
