Carbon Paw-Prints: Eco-Friendly Pets

For those who believe in reducing their carbon footprint, have you ever stopped to wonder about the carbon footprint of your pet? It is estimated that a single cat causes almost half a tonne of greenhouse gas emissions each year, with each dog causing around 1.75 tonnes, so if you are looking to reduce your own carbon footprint, you would do well to look at the carbon pawprints your pets are also leaving behind.

One of the main culprits is pet food. Processed pet foods are often the easiest way forward for most owners – not only are they convenient, but they also provide the proper nutrition pets need at a good price. Some pet foods will also contain certain cuts of meat not normally consumed by humans – this reduces waste, so is good.

There is little one can do if processed pet food is required. If possible, one should buy from local pet food suppliers to minimise the food miles but this is often easier said than done. There are also some issues with pet food packaging – tins are easily recyclable but some other pet food packaging is not so easy to dispose of in a green way. When buying processed food, try to look for brands that make the food in the same country and are not imported, and also try to use brands who get the food from sustainable sources with as many natural ingredients as possible, for example Whiskas use fish from sustainable sources and Nature’s Gift do not use additives.

For those with dogs, try to use biodegradable plastic bags when scooping up poop. These should be available from most pet shops. Cat owners should try to avoid using clay-based kitty litter as this kind of kitty litter does not break down easily and can contain carcinogenic compounds.

Fleas are something that most pet owners will come across. Effective, natural treatments against fleas can be based on concentrated essential lavender and tea tree oils however they are usually for the ultra-dedicated owner and can still be toxic so care must be taken when administering them.

Toys and accessories are part of most owners’ kit. Many items are made from plastic or nylon, neither of which degrade easily. Wherever possible, owners should attempt to buy accessories and toys made from natural materials – hemp products are popular because they are strong, durable and biodegradable; Mats and rugs can be made from recycled polyester or organic cotton; Many cats and dogs are happy with home-made toys which can be used many times. If you own a cat, a cat nip plant is essential as you can rub the leaves onto old cat nip toys and the cat will go crazy over the toy again. Creativity is the key – use old wool, paper and string and you should be able to easily make something your pet will enjoy and love!

Personally I can’t be without my eco-friendly jute bags either for carry around all those Organic and Eco-Friendly Products. But apart from that the list is top banana! Now if I could just get my kids to eat eco-friendly produce all the time my battle would be over. Mine can’t seem to get enough of what’s bad for them e.g. cheese-strings & dairy-lee lunch-ables! Still the little one eats what he’s told at the moment. How long that lasts for is anyone’s guess though.
